According to Joe Montes, president, “Naturally, there are certain items made of gold that are worth more than just their gold content. For example, some gold coins fall into this category due to their age and rarity. The same holds true for various antique items which, if sold at auction, might well bring the seller considerably more money than the melt value of their gold content”.
“This being said, it is time to ask yourself how you can find out how much these items are really worth and how you should go about offering them for sale? You also need to ask yourself if the extra value is significant enough to justify waiting longer when you need the cash right now for a financial emergency”.
Many older and rare gold coins are frequently worth more than just their gold value. In some rare cases too, old coins can be extremely valuable. Fortunately, there are inexpensive guide books for specific types of coins that can give you a pretty good idea about their current market value “as rare coins”. Many coins pulled-up from old shipwrecks as treasure are worth literally a fortune. However, we haven’t had such a coin sent in so far.
This ‘added value’ can also apply to certain antique jewelry items manufactured by famous makers. If you have ever watched ‘Antiques Roadshow’ on TV, you have probably seen examples of such items that were literally worth a fortune. However, the only way to really know is to have the item appraised by a specialist such as the people on the Antiques Roadshow programs. Established dealers in rare coins can most likely refer you to such an expert or even appraise your coins themselves for a small fee.
Modern gold coins such as Krugerrands and various newer coins from the U.S. and abroad, have little if any value beyond that of their actual gold content because they have been produced in huge quantities for investors.
Joe Montes also added, “Yes, we surely buy many gold coins but we certainly don’t wish to deprive a seller or destroy a rare, valuable item. We haven’t had it happen yet, but if such a rare and valuable item came to us in a SECUREPAKTM mailing envelope and we spotted it, we would certainly inform the seller and suggest that selling to us or any other gold buyer might be a big mistake. That would be the honest, ethical thing to do and would be more important to us than any profit we might make on such a transaction”.
There is one other consideration worth mentioning. Certain larger gold nuggets can be worth considerably more than just their gold value too and we suggest that recreational prospectors check out such items with an expert before selling them to any Internet buyer just for the value in their gold. Such items often bring more on eBay or from a private sale to collectors, than any Internet buyer could offer.”
